What to do with too many projects as a multipotentialite

Updated

You found a word for it. Multipotentialite. Sometimes polymath. Sometimes scanner. The word says several real interests can belong to one person, and that being told to pick a single calling was the wrong instruction. Keep that. The word still does not tell you what gets the hours this month.

The relief is real. People who carry a company, a craft, a course of study, and a health practice have been treated as unfocused for years. A name that stops the apology matters. On the next Monday the projects are still there, and a name cannot rank them.

What the advice already gets right

Emilie Wapnick's talk Why some of us don't have one true calling and the book How to Be Everything argue that many interests are a strength, and that a working life can hold more than one of them. The Puttylike note I'm a Multipotentialite, now what adds the limit that matters: you do not have to pursue every passion this second. Choose a handful to start. The others can wait months or years.

That is the useful half. The missing half is what the handful looks like once the week gets crowded, and what you are allowed to see fall.

A handful is still a pile

A handful fails when each project expects a full week. The company wants the evenings. The instrument wants a daily practice. The study wants a long morning. Health wants the run that keeps getting moved. Touching all four so that none of them feel neglected produces four thin weeks.

People in this spot already invent a cap. Two lines, sometimes three, until a date they can name. The interests stay. The energy does not split into equal shares. The lines continue together. This season still has a front.

Polymath is the same week

Polymath is the older word. Reference pages, including the multipotentiality entry, treat a polymath as someone with real command of more than one field, and a multipotentialite as someone with the interests and the potential. The distinction is about depth. It says nothing about Tuesday.

If you are early, the risk is opening the next field before this one has had a season. If you are already deep in two fields, the risk is the same week wearing both of them at full intensity. In both cases some lines lead and the others stay where you can find them. Depth comes from a run of weeks on the lines in front.

A famous life is a finished story

Historical names get offered as proof. A painter who also built machines. A printer who also ran experiments and held office. The list shows that range has existed. A biography is the story after the choices. It does not show which three things got that season, or which practice went quiet so another could move.

Copying the list of fields is how four projects start on the same Monday. Leadership lessons pulled from those lives are a separate subject. They do not choose where this season's energy goes. The usable part of a public life, when there is one, is ordinary: a period of work, a few lines in front, and the rest waiting without being declared dead.

Where the season does the choosing

A season of about twelve weeks is long enough for a line to change shape, and short enough that you still remember why you picked it. At most three lines lead. One may keep a light effort answer so it stays warm. Another may be quiet on purpose. How to park a line without pretending it does not matter is what to do with the ambitions you are not leading.

The week inside that season is a smaller cut: what to work on this week when you have several goals. The same argument, without the personality word, is how to keep more than one ambition alive.

One line can rise while another falls

The label hides the trade, because every interest is supposed to be a strength you are already using. While the company takes the evenings, the runs get shorter and sleep gets later. Health falls. That fall can be the right price for the season. Leave it off the page and it returns as a surprise in week eight.

Put the lines side by side. The rise and the fall belong in the same glance. A personality word cannot draw that. A record of what you actually did can.

Where the lines stay

Every ambition is a lifeline. Effort moves it. A season says which ones lead.

Seccant keeps each ambition as a lifeline on one canvas. A season of about twelve weeks puts the emphasis on at most three lines. Logging is a tap. Up to 5 lifelines, tasks, effort, and your seasons stay free. The calendar is read-only.

The interests you were given a name for stay on the canvas. This season, three of them get the energy. At the next review you choose again, with the trade already in view.
